What type of DNS records can I manage?

The LaneChange.Net DNS Server Manager supports A, MX, CNAME, TXT (can be used for SPF records) and NS for name server delegations.

What TTL (Time to Live) values do you use and can I change them?

Currently, we use the TinyDNS defaults for all TTL’s:

2560 (42 mins 40 secs) for SOA records
259200 (3 days) for NS records and its associated A record
86400 (1 day) for all other record types.

You cannot directly change these values, however there are two ways in which you can influence the TTL’s for your records, depending on your needs:

  1. Use the Expire/Active On Date feature: This feature allows you to set a specific start and stop date and time for your record. This allows you to specify the exact time you want a record to expire from cache. As that time approaches, the TTL is automatically adjusted so as to achieve this goal. This feature is used when you want to move your site from one IP to another at a specific time.
  2. When using the Expire On Date feature, any date/time that is more than 2 hours away will have the TTL set to a maximum of 2 hours. So if you set your record to expire on 2030-01-01, your record will have a TTL of 2 hours, until 2029-12-31 22:01 at which time the system will start decrementing the TTL so that it expires exactly at midnight.

Do you handle reverse DNS lookups ie: PTR records?

Yes! You can create a PTR record out of any A or MX record that has an IP address, by clicking on the “Create PTR from this record” checkbox on the DNS Records page.

NOTE: Your IP Address Provider MUST delegate reverse resolution to us in order for reverse DNS to function, since they own the IP address and thus control how its reversed domain resolves.

    For example, if you create the A record:
        www.lanechange.net to point to: 209.167.201.7

    And you click the PTR checkbox, we would create this PTR record:
        7.201.167.209.in-addr.arpa to point to www.lanechange.net

NOTE: You must create a unique Fully Qualified Domain Name for this to work. Automatic creation of pointer records does not work with wildcard hostnames (see next question) or host names that contain the base domain name only.

Note: Clicking the Create PTR option only works if you have an entire Class C address space. Unless you’re a large corporation, this size of network is not given out too often! In the case of smaller net-blocks, your ISP will use Classless Reverse Delegation. This will require that you create the zone name created by your ISP in our DNS Manager as a separate domain. This is an advanced feature. For help with this, please contact our Support team.

Do you support wildcard hostnames?

Yes! Just create an A record with a * like this:
    *.lanechange.net ip: 209.167.201.7

Now all queries for <anything>.lanechange.net will resolve to the above IP.

Do you support Round Robin DNS?

Yes! Round robin DNS allows you to list more than one IP address for a given hostname. Our servers will then return, in random order, those IP addresses listed. This is a very basic form of load balancing and should NOT be relied upon for fault detection as DNS has no way of knowing if a web server is up or down.

To setup Round Robin DNS, simple create multiple A records with the same FQDN (fully qualified domain name) and different IP addresses. Round Robin DNS will kick-in automatically.

Describe your current DNS Server network setup

Our DNS network consists of geographically distributed servers located in separate data centers. Each data center is fed by different internet backbone providers, offering our clients greater redundancy and a distributed network presence. Our servers are located across the globe:

    ns1.lanechange.net - Seattle (USA)
    ns2.lanechange.net - Dallas (USA)
    ns3.lanechange.net - London (UK)
    ns4.lanechange.net - Arizona (USA)
    e.ns.lanechange.info - Malaysia

Monitoring scripts run continuously to double check the sanity of all servers in the network and if any server is found to be out of sync, our technical staff is automatically alerted, 24 hours a day.

What server software are you using for your DNS Manager?

The LaneChange.Net DNS Manager is a combination of in-house developed software and the DNS servers are powered by djbdns.

How long does it take for a DNS Manager change to go live?

DNS record changes made in the DNS Manager will be published to our network within 20 minutes. Although your new data is live on our servers in 20 minutes, it may take up to 24 hours for your changes to be fully visible across the Internet due to propagation delays. Propagation delay is the time it takes caching servers to time out old information before contacting us for new information.
